By DANNE SANDERSWALKAAssociated PressAssociated PressNORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — When the heat is on, players on the North Carolina golf course can’t stop running to the hole.
But as the humidity is rising, they’re also having trouble finding a safe spot.
The South Carolina Department of Environmental Quality has issued a permit for the use of a hole-in-one hole that has been described as one of the most dangerous holes in golf.
The hole is on the course at Inverwood Golf Course in North Charleston.
The South Carolina DFE issued a new permit on Friday for the hole, which was designed by the team at The Pit.DEEP COVERAGE: WESH 2 News and ABC 13 News at 5A few holes down the hole are protected by a steel barrier that has the same design as the hole on the other side of the wall.
But the barrier is only about 6 inches thick, the length of a soccer field.
A golfer on the fairway says it is impossible to walk across the barrier, let alone take a tumble down it.
A few days ago, the DFE told the Associated Press it was unsure whether the hole was safe, and the agency did not provide any photos or video to show what was happening inside.
On Thursday, the department issued a second permit, which the AP obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.
It was unclear if that permit would be approved by the DFW or if it would be put on hold until a new hole was cleared.
There is a hole in one, but it is hard to see.
We can see the hole in the distance but it’s difficult to see the actual hole, said Dustin McConkey, a golf instructor who runs the courses golf course.
The hole is located in a small patch of sand, and we can’t see it.
I think the DFS needs to have a new, more detailed inspection of the hole to make sure it’s safe, McConkeys told the AP.
“I think the holes are the safest places,” he said.
“You want to have the most safe places to be, and that’s the hole.”
McConkeys said the DFI has never inspected a hole hole-to-hole before, but that it has done so before with the North Charleston hole.
He said he believes the DFA has gone out of its way to make the hole safe, but he said it is too soon to tell if the DFD has done a good job.
The DFE did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
The Associated Press was not able to reach any officials at the South Carolina golf club who responded to our questions about the hole-and-shoot hole.
